5 Easy Ways to Choose Your Non Fiction Book Topic

write Nov 20, 2024

Are you finding it tough to decide on a topic for your nonfiction book? Trust me, I've been there too—stuck between thinking I have no book in me and feeling like I could write about twenty different topics. By the end of this post, though, you'll have more clarity on your book topic. I'll break down five easy steps to choose your topic and give you some insights from my own messy experiences.

First things first—welcome back to my blog! If you're new here, my name is Karen, and on this platform, we cherish our bodies through all life's stages. If you're familiar with my "Creative Life in Motion" podcast, then you already know I usually delve into walking. Recently, I've started integrating writing content because, believe it or not, walking and writing really complement each other. Especially if you run a YouTube channel or blog, wouldn't it feel amazing to create something tangible, like a book?

Now, let's dive into choosing that perfect book topic. The first step is to brain dump and visualize the outcome. Just put a timer on for five minutes and let your ideas flow without judgment. For example, in my current book "The Walk of Trust," I imagined a space where meditation, exercise, and productivity merged harmoniously. When you envision the outcome, it gives you a strong sense of purpose, making the daily grind of writing more fulfilling.

Secondly, tap into your passion. Out of your pool of ideas, pick the one that excites you the most. Writing a book is a long journey, and having a passionate connection to your topic will make it much easier. My first book was about my weight loss journey, and since it was something I'd been passionate about for years, it almost wrote itself.

Next, reflect on your life experiences. What have you overcome? What lessons have you learned? This doesn't have to be a monumental transformation. You can find profound stories in everyday experiences. Take time—20 minutes to be exact—to really dive into these questions and document your thoughts.

Fourth, identify your target audience. This can be tricky but think less about specific demographics and more about where your readers are in their life journey. My books cater to people who've lost weight and gained it back again, needing permission to like and love their bodies.

Lastly, create your topic treasure chest. You might find that what you start writing about evolves into something bigger. Keep a short list of future book ideas. Writing, like walking, requires consistency. Some days you won’t feel like it, but just like lacing up your shoes, getting started is the hardest part.

I hope these tips help you get started on your nonfiction book journey. If you found this helpful, give it a like and share your biggest takeaway in the comments below. Let’s make writing Wednesdays a thing and continue walking on Thursdays!

Until next time, happy writing and walking!
